Don’t let bedbugs bite: Used furniture banned from dorms

QUINCY - Forget that comfy couch from your parents’ basement or the $10 papasan chair off Craigslist.

Eastern Nazarene College has instituted a "new furniture only" policy in its dorms as a preventative measure on the heels of a nationwide recurrence of bedbug infestations.

"It's tough," said Robert Benjamin, director of residence life at the school. "Can you imagine being a college student and every year having to buy new furniture? That's not a good thing. ... It's not something that we enjoy at all."

The college began considering a ban in the early spring, in part influenced by a bedbug epidemic in dorms at a sister school in San Diego that officials traced to bugs brought in on used furniture. Students at that school had to be taken out of dorms and housed elsewhere while the bedbugs were biting.

Some students of Boston colleges who are living off campus have also been hit by bedbugs, Benjamin said.
